It’s summer again, and I’m sure many of you are excited to see your grandkids! That’s why I’ve made this page of essential safety tips every grandparent should know when they visit. They are tips that I’d never put much thought into before, but now I see why they are so important. Let me start with a story about my own cute grandkids:

My year is always filled with multiple trips to Arizona to see my grandchildren. One reason my grandkids love visits from Grammy is the special treat I bring in my purse – my breath mints!  I have one two year old little granddaughter, that when she sees me, she doesn’t even say hi.  She immediately asks, “Mints?”

While I am at their homes, I also always catch them searching through my purse looking for them. But mints aren’t the only thing that is in my purse. I also carry small bottles of medication. My grandkids are too small to see the difference between mints and pills, which could easily be mistaken for candy or tic-tacs. Clearly, leaving them in my purse for them to find later is putting them at risk.

That’s why I’ve decided to keep my purse along with my medications “up away and out of sight.” Up and Away and Out of Sight is a reminder for all of us grandparents (and any other adults) to keep pills and medication safely away from innocent, little hands. Accidents happen more than you may think with about 60,000 children ending up in emergency rooms every year for ingesting medicine that wasn’t safely stored.

It’s easy to remember to keep medicine away from kids when you’re at home, but accidents don’t take vacation. Even when you’re traveling, you need to safely store all medication away and out of sight of from children.

To help keep your sweet babies safe, whether they are in your home or you are at theirs, keep these 3 tips in mind:

  • Keep medicine in the original container- Unfortunately, re-sealable bags and pill organizers are easy for children to figure out and open, so make sure that your medicine is safely stored in the original container. These containers are specially made to be child-resistant and difficult for little ones to open. And sometimes adults too. As in me. Yes, I too can not always open those safety locked caps, which, oddly enough, brings peace of mind.
  • If you’re staying with your grandchildren in a hotel, make sure to secure medicine and vitamins somewhere up high, where they can neither see or reach them.
  • When you stay over at your children’s homes, remember to ask your now adult kids where you can safely store medications. Just remember to keep it up, away, and out of sight!

Medication safety has never really crossed my mind until now, and I am so glad that I read through Up and Away and Out of Sight’s safety tips. It never occurred to me that telling my grandchildren their medicine was candy to help them take it was actually a dangerous thing to do (though now, it completely makes sense!). I’ve even saved the Poison Help hotline (800-222-1222) on my phone because with little children, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Well, it is time for me to head on down to the hot, hot heat of Arizona to spend some quality time with my little loves. Hope your summer is filled with lots of fun, safe visits from your grandchildren! You deserve it!

Be honest – does your husband ever annoy you? (Chuckle, eye roll.) Sometimes our men make us want to hop in the car and drive far, far away. While some occasional distance can be healthy for marriage, it’s usually best to face the music and work things out. It also helps to be introspective and make sure we’re doing our part to ensure wedded bliss. The secrets to a happy marriage are actually pretty simple. Whether you’ve been at it for eons or only a few years, here are 18 tips to ensure a successful marriage.

1. Praise your spouse often. A sincere thank you goes far. Be gentle and conservative with criticism.

2. Make a weekly date part of your routine. This shows him he is important to you and you want to be with him.

3. Don’t criticize his family. If your in-laws drive you nuts, bite your tongue. Complaining about his family only causes friction and embarrassment.

4. Don’t gossip about him – doing so is inappropriate and disloyal. Your sisters and friends don’t need to know the personal and intimate details of your marriage.

5. Take care of yourself. You don’t have to dress to the nines every day, but make an effort with your appearance.

6. Love the whole package. He’s not 25 anymore, so maybe his waistline has expanded while his hairline has receded. Cherish him anyway and stay true to your marriage commitment.

7. Listen to his work woes. Ask follow up questions.

<img src=”//scripts.mediavine.com/assets/100×200.png” alt=”” data-pin-media=”http://www.thisgrandmaisfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/18-Simple-Keys-To-A-Happy-Marriage.jpg”

8. Don’t keep secrets. You’re in a partnership of trust, so be open about your finances, health, work, and relationships.

9. Be helpful. Fill his car tank with gas, warm his meal, hang up his damp towel. Small courtesies are love in action.

10. Don’t hold grudges. When you disagree, swallow your pride and do what you can to smooth things over. Always put your marriage and his feelings first.

11. Keep your sense of humor handy. Life isn’t always peachy, and some laughter can lighten the mood and his spirits.

12. Don’t play the martyr. Communicate your needs.

13. Pray together. Consider God to be the third partner in your marriage.

14. Don’t friend your high school boyfriend on Facebook. Steer clear of old flames and be cautious with your connections on social media.

15. Encourage his hobbies. Respecting his space for his hobbies is beneficial for both of you.

16. Make time to chat. Communicate frequently and share your news.

17. Love yourself. You’re no longer in your twenties, but don’t fret over your aging body. Your self-confidence makes you very attractive.

18. Set an example of a happy marriage for your kids. Your kids notice your devotion and respect for each other, and you can emulate what a healthy marriage is.

Simply stated, unselfishness yields a happy marriage. Always put your husband first in your life.

Thought you were familiar with all our nation’s holidays? Get ready to ham it up on March 1st, in honor of National Pig Day.

“Bacon” your pardon, but did you realize our country has a holiday devoted to pigs? National Pig Day is March 1st, but I’ve never seen it on my calendar. Just where did this obscure holiday originate, and why have most of us never heard of it?

According to the National Day Calendar website, National Pig Day pays tribute to the domesticated pig. Pig fans gather to celebrate at zoos, schools, sporting events and nursing homes across the U.S. The holiday is more widely celebrated in the Midwest. People throw parties or parades to admire the pigs, or they simply pig out on pigs. (It’s an appropriate cuisine for the day, after all. And one has to eat!)

Apparently, this special day for swine was conceived in 1972 by two sisters from Texas and North Carolina. The women said the purpose of National Pig Day is “to accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized place as one of man’s most intellectual and domesticated animals.”

There is much to love about pigs. Some families keep them as pets. Pigs are extremely clever and can be trained and even taught tricks. As food, they grace our tables in the form of pork, bacon, sausage, hot dogs, ham, baby back ribs, spare ribs, and more. Not surprisingly, pork is the most widely consumed meat in the world. A 250-pound hog  provides around 150 pounds of meat.

Speaking of pork, let’s talk recipes. These incredibly easy dishes would be perfect on your table for National Pig Day.

Pork Crock Pot Cola Ribs

Glazed Ham Pineapple Kabobs

Glazed Ham and Pineapple Kabobs - This appetizer is quick and easy to make. The brown sugar coconut glaze is what makes these kabobs truly amazing. They are the perfect addition to any BBQ!

If you have little ones underfoot, you’ve probably met a famous pig named Peppa. Peppa Pig is a popular British animated TV show, which has yielded Peppa Pig games, Peppa Pig books, Peppa Pig coloring pages, etc. Amazon offers lots of Peppa Pig products, such as:

Peppa Pig International Day DVDPeppa Pig Ups and Downs Game  (similar to Shoots and Ladders), Peppa Pig Edible Icing Image Cake Topper, Peppa’s Busy Day Magnet Book, and Peppa Pig Ty Beanie Baby

Or, if you’re looking for a pig toy that caters to older kids and adults, Pass the Pigs  is a really fun, quirky game.

Presidents’ Day has our affection because it offers us a long weekend, right? A Monday off from work and school during the middle of winter is always welcome. And let’s face it, the sales are nice, too!

But the holiday means so much more than a red-tag sale on a mattress. Read on for some inspiring Presidents’ Day facts.

Back in 1968, Congress introduced a bill to help create some long weekends to (hopefully) prevent people from skipping work. The bill passed in 1971 under President Nixon, and the holiday Washington’s Birthday was placed on the third Monday of February. It took another decade before Americans started to include Lincoln in their celebration and call it Presidents’ Day.

However, Presidents’ Day doesn’t fall on the actual birthdays of any of our presidents: Washington’s birthday is February 22, and Lincoln’s is February 12. And the holiday is actually celebrated differently depending on your home state. While most states spotlight Washington and Lincoln, others celebrate Jefferson (Alabama), for example.

OK, so why is the focus primarily on Presidents Washington and Lincoln? If you’re fuzzy on American history, here is a little recap (link topinspired.com) you can share with your grandkids. We can teach them why these leaders deserve our deepest honor and respect.

George Washington

  • Served as president from 1789 to 1797.
  • As our nation’s first president, he was voted unanimously to serve two terms.
  • He would not accept any salary, and even contributed his own funds to our country’s budget.
  • He created the title, “Mr. President.”
  • He served as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army for 8½ years. The poor army struggled in miserable conditions, but under Washington’s leadership beat Great Britain.
  • He organized the first Cabinet and played a major role in creating the Bill of Rights, amendments to our Constitution that guarantee many of our rights and freedoms.
  • He helped create our nation’s policies of neutrality with other countries.

Abraham Lincoln

  • Served as president from 1861 until his assassination in 1865.
  • He was our country’s 16th president.
  • He worked hard to preserve the Union and win the Civil War by improving the army’s military tactics.
  • He was antislavery, and under the Emancipation Proclamation, more than three million slaves were set free.
  • He implemented the printing of paper money and bank credit under the National Currency Act.
  • He created the Department of Agriculture, which helped our nation’s farmers.
  • He created our Thanksgiving holiday as a token of gratitude to God for winning the Civil War.

And just for fun, check out these Presidents’ Day activities for kids. This 300-piece puzzle of our nation’s presidents is a surefire tool to help educate kids on our nation’s leaders. If you want a more “puzzling” challenge, try the White House 3D puzzle, which includes 64 pieces and is rated “easy.” This American presidents activity book contains puzzles and other fun pencil games. There is also a U.S. presidents card game that would be fun to try!

Like it or not, Valentine’s Day is as ingrained into our culture as Christmas. It’s hard to avoid the in-your-face pinks and reds, all in anticipation of February 14. But commercialization aside, Valentine’s Day is a wonderful time to shower some love on our families.

Just where did this mushy day of love originate? Get ready to swoon! This site History.com explains that there are several versions of St. Valentine. One legend suggests that he was a Roman priest during the third century. When the emperor outlawed marriage for soldiers, Valentine disregarded the law and continued to secretly perform weddings for young couples. When caught, Valentine was martyred.

Another legend teaches that St. Valentine tried to help Christian prisoners escape the beatings and torture of Roman prisons. After he was caught and imprisoned, Valentine fell in love with a girl who visited him. He wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine” before he was killed. Whichever story you want to believe, St. Valentine was known to be popular, heroic and romantic.

It is believed that we celebrate St. Valentine on February 14 in an effort to “Christianize” an ancient pagan fertility festival held in mid February. Part of the festival included the pairing off of the young single men and women of the cities.

It’s kind of fun to learn the ancient legends behind our popular holidays! Why not share these stories with your grandkids as you engage them in some kids’ Valentine crafts?

Valentine coloring pages are a simple way to spend an afternoon together. You can also find a wide array free, printable Valentine cards here The Balance. If you’re up for something different, though, check out this clothes pin heart wreath. What an easy, darling Valentine craft!

Of course, Amazon offers Valentine stuff galore. Check out these fun, no-mess, removable gel window stickers. Speaking of stickers, if you know any sticker fans, they’ll love you forever when they see this set of over 1,000 Valentine stickers. The stickers cost under $20 shipped, and should last you until the day you die. Also, these Valentine pencils are perfect for passing out.

For your favorite LEGO fan, this Cupid dog set is adorable and costs only $10.

However you celebrate it with your grandkids, we hope you have a very Happy Valentine’s Day! Maybe you could break out your chocolate stash to share with your grandkids while they craft and play. (Orrrr, maybe not.)

I’m a sponsored Clorox® Influencer, but all opinions are my own. Please see below for additional disclosure.

Do you have a piece of clothing that you just can’t part with?  Maybe something that was part of a defining moment in your life? A prom dress?  A letterman’s jacket? Or maybe a teeshirt that you bought at your first concert?

For me, it is two simple scarves. They are 22 years old and I can’t throw them away.

It was 1995 when I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.  I had three young children and underwent 6 weeks of radiation,  a double mastectomy and almost a year of intense chemotherapy.  I lost all of the hair on my head, most of eyebrows and eyelashes but I never lost the hair on my legs.  You would think that if there could be ONE perk about having cancer, that it might be that I wouldn’t have to shave my legs!  But shave them I did.

I wish that I had taken way more pictures of myself during that time, but I only have two and I treasure them both.  While going through this experience I didn’t want pictures taken of me without my hair but now I wish I had more to document that time in my life.  Here I am with my three littles.  My hair is completely gone in this picture and if you look closely under the white brim of the hat, you can see the scarf that I used to wear.  I never wore a wig.  It was much too hot, itchy and slippery!

Losing my hair was one of the hardest things I had to experience while going through cancer.  Your hair frames your face and it’s one of the first things that people notice about you.

Wearing my scarves became who I was.  They became a trophy in my victory of surviving cancer and in now being 22 years cancer free.   They remind me that I can do hard things and they remind me to appreciate all that I have in life.

When the time came that my chemotherapy was over and my hair started to grow back, I was hesitant to remove my scarves.  It was almost like I was putting away a part of myself that I never wanted to forget.  So I keep my scarves because it’s a way of keeping my memories bright.

Every once in a while, I bring my scarves out and give them a good washing.  To keep their colors bright, I use Clorox2® Stain Remover and Color Booster.  They look as good today as they did 22 years ago.  Even old clothes can stay looking new with the help of Clorox 2.

Keep your memories bright with Clorox 2 Stain Remover and Color BoosterI just toss my scarves into my washing machine and add the Clorox2 along with my favorite detergent right into the wash basin. For best results, start the washer and add both your detergent and Clorox2 before adding your clothes. Using Clorox 2 extends the life of your wardrobe and keep your clothes looking newer longer.  Just take a look at my scarves!

Keep your memories alive and bright by using Clorox2 so you won’t have to part with YOUR special article of clothing anytime soon.

Now for our GIVEAWAY! Enter the rafflecopter below for a chance to win these great prizes!

Most of us understand the concept of Groundhog Day: every February 2 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, a cute little groundhog named Phil emerges. If he sees his shadow, we’re in for six more weeks of cold and snow. If he doesn’t see his shadow, break out the flip flops because spring is on its way.

My vast experience with Groundhog Day may be similar to yours: laughing through Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day movie back in 1993. Andie MacDowell plays the kind-hearted love interest of Murray’s cynical TV weatherman, as he is forced to relive the same day over and over in order to win her love and learn some important life lessons.

But there is more to this quirky holiday than the movie! Here are four little-known facts about February 2, aka Groundhog Day.

1. Groundhog Day hails from a Christian tradition called Candlemas Day, when church leaders would bless candles and distribute them to families during the darkest part of winter. The families would light the candles and place them at their windows. If the sun came out on February 2, six more weeks of winter was supposedly in store. When German settlers arrived in Pennsylvania, they continued the tradition and added the groundhog to the fun.

An old English saying goes:

If Candlemas be fair and bright,

Winter has another flight.

If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,

Winter will not come again.

2. The official holiday began in 1887 at Gobbler’s Knob in the town of Punxsutawney, known as the weather capital of the world. The newspaper, The Punxsutawney Spirit, named the famous groundhog, “Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary.” (Yep, that’s a mouthful.)

3. Groundhogs are also known as woodchucks. They normally eat dandelions, clover, and grasses out in the wild, but Phil thrives on a diet of dog food and ice cream. He weighs 15 pounds and lives in the Punxsutawney Library, according to this site. Stormfax.

4. Surprise! Phil isn’t very accurate in his annual weather predictions. Since his debut at Gobbler’s Knob in 1887, he has been correct in predicting spring’s arrival only 39% of the time. Maybe that’s one reason he’s grumpy, but this cute book Grumpy Groundhog.

Another fun book for Groundhog Day is Groundhog Weather School: Fun Facts About Weather and Groundhogs .

Check out these other Groundhog Day-themed activities. My family loves Dowdle Folk Art puzzles, and they have a really cute Groundhog Day puzzle. Kids also love temporary tattoos, which would be a fun addition to this silly holiday.

Are you interested in growing your Instagram account with highly engaged followers? Wouldn’t you love to know the best times and the right frequency for posting to your account? How about a platform that helps keep you organized, is easy to use and best of all saves you valuable time? Tailwind for Instagram is the answer and it is available now.

Tailwind’s most-used product is a visual marketing platform for businesses of all sizes, from bloggers and solopreneurs to large, multi-national companies. They are best known for Tailwind for Pinterest – a complete suite of tools to help marketers build, manage and optimize campaigns on Pinterest.

We signed up with Tailwind for Pinterest in late 2013. Using their tools and analytics has helped us grow our Pinterest following to over 187,000 highly engaged followers. The results of our growth on Pinterest has been tremendous. It has provided increased traffic to our blog, substantial growth in our email subscribers and expanded our influencer bandwidth and viability with brands and companies.

We have been patiently waiting for Tailwind to expand their analytics and scheduling tools to include Instagram. The wait is over, and the scheduling can begin. Here are a few of the features included with Tailwind for Instagram.

  • Scheduling and analytics tool built on the same platform as Tailwind’s popular Pinterest marketing tool.  It is designed to enable bloggers, influencers and marketers to schedule their Instagram posts in advance on a desktop computer or a mobile device.
  • Tailwind for Instagram uses push notifications to alert members when it is time for them to post to Instagram. They need only swipe the screen and their scheduled post will be waiting for them to post with their desired caption copied to their clipboard.
  • Tailwind is an official Instagram Partner. Tailwind has been thoroughly vetted by Instagram. As an official partner, this means you can trust the quality of the software, that it abides by terms of use, and that your sensitive data will be secure and protected.
  • For bloggers and small and medium-sized businesses, Tailwind for Instagram costs $9.99 per month if billed annually or $15 if billed monthly. Enterprise pricing is custom and features additional product enhancements like hashtag monitoring, community management, influencer identification and advanced analytics.
  • You can start a free trial at Tailwind. (no credit card necessary)

Post to your Instagram in 3 easy steps!

In addition to quick and easy scheduling, you can see your posting schedule at a glance. Tailwind also analyzes best posting times of day/night then suggests those specific timeslots for higher engagement.

You can view your calendar visually and schedule posts on your desktop, tablet or phone.

Enjoy this short video to see how scheduling and posting to Instagram is 60% faster with Tailwind than without it.  That’s a one minute saving per post.  With the average brand posting to Instagram 1 to 2 times a day, that adds up to 6 to 12 hours saved per year.

The video also shows Tailwind’s bulk image upload and browser extension features being used to schedule 10 posts to Instagram in under a minute.  These features might be especially appealing to those who manage multiple Instagram accounts, who regram user-generated content, or who post content to Instagram from their website.

Tailwind for Instagram not only saves you time, it helps increase your following. Watch the Facebook live video below to find out how one company tripled their following!

Tailwind’s goal is to make marketing your business as seamless as possible. As business owners we have learned providing a great product is not enough. It needs to come with excellent customer support. This is where we feel Tailwind stands out above other companies.

When we have a question, it is answered in a timely manner. If we have a problem, it gets fixed with a quick turnaround time and follow-up. Tailwind has asked us multiple times “what can we do to make your experience better?”. We have responded with specific answers and seen many of our (reasonable) requests implemented. If you are serious about taking your Instagram following to the next level Tailwind has the all the tools and support to get you there.

Head on over and start your free trial, you won’t regret it!

I don’t know about you, but I love a good chickflick. I am all about the sappy romance, the love-hate relationships, the mushy kissing – I soak it up! But sometimes, I soak it up a little too much. I start thinking to myself, Why doesn’t my husband chase down my car with his motorcycle to tell me he loves me? Or, Why doesn’t he shower me with compliments or confide to me that I’m his soulmate? It’s moments like these where I need a reality check. I am married to an incredible man! But the truth is, he is just not a hopeless romantic. He has a quiet personality, and doesn’t often express his emotions through words, nor is he big on romantic  gestures. Does that mean he doesn’t love me? Of course not!!! For anyone else who’s spouse is like mine, here are 11 simple ways your husband is more romantic than a chickflick!

1. He makes you laugh – Marriage is a long, long time. Husbands who are still making their wives laugh 25 years later are clearly just as in-love with her as ever. He loves to make you smile, and that says more than words. If that doesn’t completely sweep you off your feet, I don’t know what will!

2. He doesn’t intrude on your sacred free-time – When my family was young and my husband was a student trying to get into dental school, we welcomed our second child. My husband was exhausted from not only school, but from his part time job. But, despite being tired, he always made sure that on Tuesdays and Thursdays, he was at home so I could go to my dance class. He knew that after giving birth and then spending all day, every day with two children under two, I needed some time to myself. This simple gesture of caring for our kids twice every week for me meant more to me then he’ll ever know. It still means a lot to me!

If your husband understands the importance of your free time, you certainly don’t need any chickflick star! Your husband is worth a thousand of those!

3. He let’s you get your beauty sleep – Aaaah, nothing says romance like a spouse who let’s his companion sleep in. And hey, it shows him a lot of love when you do the same!

4. He makes time for you – As marriage goes on, life get’s busy! From careers to kids, there is a lot going on for husbands and wives. But after all the years, and all the career moves, schools, sports, weddings, and grandchildren, a loving husband will still make time to be with you and enjoy your company. Why? Because a man who’s in-love loves spending time with just you, even if only for a few minutes. Harville Hendrix, author of Making Marriage Simple, says it’s important in marriage to,”Be present.” He says the mindset between spouses should be, “[if] it’s one minute or five minutes or 10 minutes, I’m shutting down my internal movie so we can look at your movie.” A husband that is present during his time with you is certainly swoon-worthy!

5. He is always on your side – A loving husband is there to protect you and support you. He is always there for you whether you’ve just experienced something amazing, or something disappointing. You know you can always turn to him, like your very own Ryan Gosling from The Notebook.

6. He plans date nights – If after 25 years of marriage, your husband still puts time and effort into planning dates with you (miniature golf totally counts!), wow, are you blessed! According to psychotherapist Dr. Tina B. Tessina, “Most couples need to lower their expectations of romance and glamour and raise the level of fun they have together.” Fun date nights lead to a happier, long-lasting marriage. Any hubby who’s planning them out is certainly doing his part to keep your marriage strong. Now that’s true love!

7. He trusts  you, and you trust him – It feels so good knowing that no matter where either of you are, you don’t have to worry about the decisions he is making, and he doesn’t have to worry about you. He shows his love by always choosing integrity because he wants you to feel safe and secure. Not only that, but he trusts you too, showing that he respects you and your agency.

8. He helps around the house – This one is huge at my house. When we were newlyweds, I naively asked my husband why he had stopped the love notes, and the gift giving I’d been used to when we were dating. “Do you still love me?” I asked (I seriously blush with embarrassment remembering this!). Shocked, and rightfully hurt, my sweet husband pointed out all the things he did when he got home to show how much he loved me, from doing the dishes to cleaning the toilet. Boy, did I feel silly!

The lesson I learned is that a husband who loves his wife respects the home they’ve made together, and helps her take care of it. Who knew dishes could be so romantic?

9. He loves your children – Is there anything sweeter than watching your husband care for you kids? Whether they’re little or already adults, it’s a beautiful thing when you see your husband love and cherish the family you made together. I honestly don’t think it gets more swoon-worthy than that!

10. He still holds your hand – Even though you’ve been married a while now, he still reaches for your hand, whether at home, in the car, or walking on the street. Such a simple act of affection says a lot about the love he has for you after all these years.

11. He asks for your advice – He’s known for a while now that his wife is a wise (though not perfect) woman. He turns to you for your opinion because he values you and wants you to know. Now that’s a hunk!

What does your husband do that’s more romantic than a chickflick?

Dense and moist, this Cranberry Orange Pound Cake is an easy holiday dessert recipe to share with your family and friends. There’s nothing like a perfect pound cake to finish off your Christmas meal!

This Cranberry Orange Pound Cake is an easy holiday dessert. The orange citrus is a subtle flavor to compliment the tiny red bursts of Christmas joy!

Hey there! Molly here from What Molly Made, a food blog dedicated to all things dessert, both healthy and indulgent!I’m convinced love is the answer, that you can enjoy butter and veggies equally, that delicious baked goods should be something everyone can enjoy and that I was called to serve others through my passion for baking. And I’m doing my best to live out that passion every day!

And this Cranberry Orange Pound Cake is the perfect place to start.

I have something to admit, I am generally a chocolate dessert lover over fruit desserts. I tend to stay away from fruity desserts on the buffet table and grab the cookie or brownie first. Knowing this about myself I wanted to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone.

Being it’s the holidays and almost Christmas (HOW did that happen so fast?!) I wanted to stick to a flavor profile I knew would work together and be the perfect seasonal treat. Can you get more festive than cranberries? And the citrus from the orange is a perfect and subtle flavor to compliment the tiny red bursts of Christmas joy.

This Cranberry Orange Pound Cake is an easy holiday dessert. The orange citrus is a subtle flavor to compliment the tiny red bursts of Christmas joy!

Have you ever eaten a cranberry raw? Not once they’ve been baked, candied, or mixed with tons of sugar for jello at Thanksgiving, but a legit raw cranberry. It’s really kind of gross. Unless you’re into the whole hard and incredibly tart/bitter kind of flavor.

I can safely say I am not one of those people. I popped one in my mouth while mixing up the pound cake batter and instantly regretted what I got myself into.

But I knew this cake batter and the magic that is baking would work wonders on the cranberries. If you’ve ever done what I did, do not be afraid of making this cranberry orange pound cake recipe! When you incorporate the cranberries into the batter and throw it in the oven, they become all warm and happy and burst with delight and mix well with the sugar from the batter.

This Cranberry Orange Pound Cake is an easy holiday dessert. The orange citrus is a subtle flavor to compliment the tiny red bursts of Christmas joy!

When you cut into the cake, you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about! And it turns out that the tartness is ever so subtle and the most delicious addition to this recipe.

This cranberry orange pound cake is large enough to feed you, your family, and even your extended family. Yep, second cousin Mary and her children/cousins/friends are all welcome to join in on the pound cake situation.

This Cranberry Orange Pound Cake is an easy holiday dessert. The orange citrus is a subtle flavor to compliment the tiny red bursts of Christmas joy!

It’s perfect for the holidays and parties!

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Sharper Image. All opinions are 100% mine.

With the holiday season upon us, I’m in the thick of working through my Christmas shopping list. I have learned over the years that the key to enjoying the holidays is to simplify as much as possible. If you’re like me, battling crowds while shopping for Christmas gifts is not an enjoyable experience. Fortunately, there is a better option. Have you tried shopping online at Sharper Image? You can find unique, high-quality items for everyone on your list without breaking your bank. Have someone on your list you’re wondering what in the world they would like? Here are five gifts from Sharper Image that anyone would love!

Sharper Image Pizza Box Oven

undefined

If you’re shopping for someone who enjoys baking their own pizza, this is the gift for them. Sharper Image’s Pizza Box Oven saves time, creates pizza with a perfect crust, and is super easy to use. You may be wondering, why not just use an oven? Unlike an oven, the Pizza Box doesn’t require preheating, saving you 15-20 minutes off your meal prep time! It can cook 9” to 12” round pizza, and works for thin crust, standard crust or rising-crust pan pizza. You can use fresh dough, frozen dough or store bought pizza. Two cooking elements (top and bottom) and a non-stick rotating pan provide an evenly-cooked pizza with a crispy crust and juicy toppings. And never again will you burn your pizza. The automatic shut off feature turns the Pizza Box off automatically when the cooking cycle is complete. The adjustable thermostat includes a warming setting so every piece of pizza is the perfect temperature. I love that it looks like an actual box of pizza, and is compact enough that it takes up little counter space.

undefined

I have a 14-year- old son who handed me his Christmas list weeks ago. Can you guess what item is at the top of his list? A drone! His list also includes the exact features he wants in a drone. A quick trip to Sharper Image’s Drone Zone page provided me with 23 drones in different sizes, with various capabilities to choose from. The Quad Smart Drone has dual speed modes for excellent outdoor flying, even in moderate winds. The built-in gyroscope for stability means he can perform 360-degree maneuvers . . aka cool flips and aerial stunts. It charges easily via USB (included with purchase) or our AAA batteries.Sharper Image RC Video Camera Spy Car.

Sharper Image Remote Control Car

undefined

I am sure there is a wide appeal for the RC Video Camera Spy Car for boys and men. But I’ve decided it needs to go on my Christmas list! Why? It’s easy to drive, and shoots and transmits crystal-clear color photos with video sound. I can download the free app and pair the car with my phone. It can then be driven with my phone as a virtual joystick by tilting my phone in the direction I want it to go. To help my spying skills, it also includes digital zoom, night vision and working headlight/taillights. I’ll be entertained for hours as I spy and gather intel on my family!

Sharper Image Lava Lampundefined

I remember the time my parents brought home a Lava Lamp when I was a young “tweener.” I’m not going to tell you how long ago that was! I appreciated its coolness factor and refused to admit that I enjoyed watching the different forms/colors of lava rise and fall.  Lava Lamps are just as “cool” today as they were when I was growing up.  They are an iconic piece of decor that is timeless and a great gift for anyone on my list (including picky teenagers)!

Sharper Image VR Headset

undefined

I have quite a few techies  on my Christmas list. Trying to find a gift they will love at a price I can afford is usually a challenge. Problem solved! With this Smartphone VR Headset with Earphones, my techies will love being submerged in a virtual reality 3-D experience. It’s light and sleek (no headaches with this one!), fully adjustable, and has built-in speakers and a touchscreen button. For a techie gift it’s easy to use. Simply place your smartphone into the tray, and enjoy hundreds of free 360-degree games, apps, or videos. I fully intend to use my RC Video Camera car to take humorous footage of my loved ones while they enjoy their virtual reality experience! Now that I have five (okay, four—the RC Car is for me) gifts crossed off my list, I have more time to enjoy the holiday season with family and friends!

Tell me if this scene sounds familiar: It’s Christmas time, and  throughout your house, there are grandchildren screaming (joyfully of course!), kitchen timers buzzing, and phones ringing. There are airport trips to make, bathrooms to clean, presents to wrap, and cookies to bake. By the end of the day, you are covered in flour, frizzy-haired, and completely exhausted – then suddenly, “Deck the halls with boughs of holly! Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laaaa!” You don’t feel like answering the door to carolers… you feel like slamming it in their face and going to bed!

The holidays are a wonderful time of year to be with family, but it’s easy for any host or hostess to feel like they’re drowning in all the joy. Funny Thanksgiving Poems to Whet Your Appetite

It’s almost Thanksgiving, a day we revere for family time, delicious dishes, and football. (Don’t groan; football is just optional. No one will actually tie you down and make you watch guys in tights toss a ball around.)

Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to count our blessings and ponder what we hold dear in our lives. It’s a simple and lovely day, barely a blip as it falls between the flashier Halloween and the king of all holidays: Christmas.

Funny Thanksgiving Poems - Add some silly poetry to your Thanksgiving table this year. Your grandkids will smile at these turkeys’ antics, and the poetry will help their reading skills, too.

Considering the seriousness of Thanksgiving, why not add some fun touches – especially where kids are involved? These funny Thanksgiving poems are sure to elicit smiles as they’re shared around the table. They’ll also help promote literacy in your home, which is always important.

To help you get your creative juices flowing, Sherri and her family composed this funny Thanksgiving poem to tickle your funny bone! (scroll to bottom of post to print this poem)

Kill the turkey but not the breast, nobody ever eats the rest.

Squawk, Squawk, hit him till he’s dead, I don’t really care cause I don’t eat his head.

Let hin run with his scrawny little feet, that’s another part that nobody eats.

Mashed potatoes are the best, Why would you want to eat the rest?

Turkey is dry, gravy is slime, only the potatoes are sublime.

Spoon them up, pile them high, I’d like to eat them till I die.

Make the gravy, make the pies, if you don’t I think I’ll cry.

Eating vegetables? What a joke, give them to the healthy folk.

Here comes grandma with the rolls, It’s like heaven in my nose.

Sweet potato, sweet potato, pumpkin pie, touch my dessert plate get a fork in your eye.

Stretchy pants, stretchy pants I love you, you won’t believe what I am about to do!

Reading and even composing your own Thanksgiving poems promotes a culture of literacy in your home. Sure, it’s a holiday we’re talking about – a day off from school – but any opportunity to interject reading and writing is such a boon to children.

This article from Huffington Post outlines five hidden benefits reading gives children. Reading with our kids or grandkids helps build bonds, aids their success in school, enriches vocabulary, increases attention spans, and helps self-esteem and communication skills. Educator Jim Trelease  points out that reading aloud advertises for reading for pleasure. When they discover books that hold their interest, kids will find that reading makes them laugh, cry, and widens their world. Also, children who read or are read to are exposed to more complicated and sophisticated language, giving them a greater advantage in school and life.

So, print out these cute Thanksgiving poems and add them to your festive table. Enjoy sharing them with the kids in your life!

7 Easy Ways to Eliminate Holiday Stress

Which scenario best describes your house at Christmastime? Your family snuggles on the couch with blankets and hot cocoa under the twinkling lights of your beautifully decorated tree, as you take in a cheesy but tender Hallmark Christmas movie on a perfectly peaceful December evening. Or . . . well, just picture the same tree and lights but in a chaotic, disorganized setting.

We all want our holiday season to look like an old-fashioned greeting card. We escape to those picture-perfect Christmas movies because they depict the serene Christmases we long for. The fact is, that fictional Christmas probably ain’t gonna happen. Not when we’re dealing with holiday stress caused båy work, family obligations, shopping lists, sending holiday cards, decorating, baking the perfect Christmas cookies, etc.

That most wonderful time of year is but a few weeks away. With so much to do, don’t let holiday stress rob you of a peaceful Christmas.

Take a deep breath and remember, your holiday season is what you make of it. To help your Christmas run more smoothly, check out these holiday stress helps.

1. Store-bought goodies are legal. Baking during the holidays can be fun, and doubtlessly you have gobs of recipes collected over the years. But if you’re under a time crunch or lack energy, your grocery store bakery may have a nice substitute. Pull out your festive platter, and you’re good to go!

2. Christmas shopping for girls can be daunting. Girls of all ages are picky, and they often know just what they want, so where is the fun in the surprise? This article 18 Ultimate Christmas gifts for teen girls lists 18 really fun Christmas ideas for the teen girls in your life. This one  17 Christmas gifts for best friends includes gift ideas for your girlfriends.

3. For the precious baby in your life, look no further than these “No-Fail Best Baby Toys.” Babies love toys, and you can feel good about helping his learning and growth. Toys aid in developing motor skills and cognitive thinking.

4. Shopping is fun, but stick to your budget. Create a Christmas shopping list and resist the urge to buy more than you need. Tone down the spending by creating homemade gifts, or suggest a family gift exchange.

5. Carve out some time from your schedule to relax—alone. Escape holiday family stress to take a bath. Write a personal letter to an old friend and slip it in her Christmas card. Watch a Christmas movie (sappy is okay!). Read a book. Treat yourself to one of these “15 Best Chocolate Christmas Gifts”. Meet a close friend for lunch.

6. It’s okay to say no. Holiday parties, dinners, charity events, and church functions are great, but if you’re being asked to take on too much, step back. Remember that your family comes first.

7. Don’t throw nutrition out the window. Of course you should indulge in some holiday goodies; let’s be realistic here! But you’ll feel better about yourself if you limit the sugar. Fill up with a healthy snack before hitting the holiday parties. Try to slip in a vigorous walk each day, too.

Hopefully, these holiday stress busters will help pave the way to the peaceful, magical Christmas you desire.
