Making memories. That is our family’s motto. Whenever we have the chance to get together we try to make every event memorable. I am a 21 year breast cancer survivor so our family has always lived with the notion that we never know how many tomorrows we may have, so we try and live each moment to the fullest.

This weekend is no exception.

Our family will be getting altogether this weekend to attend a college football game. For 5 out of the 8 adults in our group, this college is their Alma Mater. So we are packing up and heading to Phoenix for the game. We can’t wait to be together.

The designated teeshirt to wear to represent our college for this game is white.

White.

A white teeshirt at a football game. In my book, that’s somewhat of a “fumble”.

A white teeshirt where you are going to eat things like hot dogs, soda, nachos, candy, maybe even a slurpee.

I already know what’s going to happen to MY white shirt.

I am going to be eating a hot dog and then BLOP! Ketchup and mustard will be prominently displayed on my shirt.

Is there anything harder to get out than a mustard stain? I say nay. Nay I say!

I decided to put Clorox 2 Stain Remover and Color Booster to the test BEFORE the game. Could they score a “touchdown” with getting a mustard stain out? Or will it turn out to be more of an “incomplete pass?”

I grabbed my white football shirt and squirted some ketchup on it followed by……mustard.

You heard me. Mustard.

Did I really just intentionally put mustard onto a white shirt?

Why yes. Yes I did.

I know what will come next. I will have eaten a chocolate bar and some chocolate crumbs will have fallen onto my shirt and in the heat, the chocolate will have melted and now I have a chocolate stain.

Do not allow it to dry on the fabric. Then into my washer in it went with a little more Clorox 2 and my regular laundry detergent.

I love having a clean house. But, I do not love cleaning. You’d think the house cleans itself! One of my least favorite cleaning tasks is window cleaning. Ten years ago we moved to a larger home. Our kitchen and family room share a long wall with eight full-length windows and a sliding glass door. The living room and entryway have eight full-length windows, and the office has three. That’s a total of 20 full-length windows. (We have a two-story house, I don’t remember the last time I washed the upstairs windows).

I sure do have a love-hate relationship with my windows. When they are clean, I am the happiest and love looking through them to our beautiful front and backyard. I tend to hate them when they are dirty. Can’t even glare at them without some disgust. Since I hate dirty windows, one would assume I clean mine regularly. Wrong. Getting them clean takes what feels like a herculean effort on my part. I usually procrastinate washing them until they are filthy.

Magically Get Your Windows Cleaned

My window cleaning story is an interesting one.

Before knowing this method I will let you in on it shortly, I have tried using other tricks and items. Among them are newspapers and Windex, rubber gloves required to prevent getting ink on all over my hands, a professional cleaning tool with a sponge scrubber, squeegee, and non-lint cleaning cloths. No matter what I tried, it has been a long, tedious process. It always ended up with clean windows with streaks left behind. I was not happy with myself. Let alone my windows.

I finally gave up and decided it was best to ignore the streaks. Because getting perfectly cleaned windows was an impossibility. Then I found this quick, easy non-streak window washing method. And my clean-freak self could not be any happier.

Tools Needed for the Cleaning

For any cleaning to be perfect, you absolutely need the right tools. And they too have to be easily accessible and available at your local store. Good news, for the windows we only need just a few supplies. These are a bucket, a mop, water, Jet Dry, and Dawn dishwashing detergent.

Using this handy cleaning bucket on wheels and microfiber mop (14.75″ 360-degree rotating metal mop) helped keep my actual cleaning time down to just 10 minutes. Which is a great save of time, compared to the long hours I used to waste and end up getting poor results. Using the right tools does make a difference.

Our cleaning tip is not only a time-saver but also saves on costs in the long run. Which is a great plus for this method. Once you buy the supplies, you can use them for long before they get depleted. And you don’t have to use large quantities of them to get your cleaning right.  

The Cleaning Process

1/2 gallon warm water
1 Tablespoon liquid Jet Dry
2-3 Tablespoons Dawn dishwashing soap
Cleaning bucket
Microfiber mop

Instructions

1. Mix all ingredients above in a large bucket.
2. Spray windows down with your hose.
3. Wipe or brush cleaning solution onto windows, immediately hose off your window.

After getting my supplies, I followed my normal routine. I sprayed my windows, wiped them with the cleaning solution, and then rinsed them down. Those three steps only are what it takes. And I found it hard to believe the spots and streaks would dry without leaving some kind of visible residue.

Fifteen minutes later, I was surprised and thrilled to find perfectly cleaned windows! How long did it take me to clean one full sliding glass door and eight full-length windows? Ten minutes flat.

I was skeptical at first, now I am a believer! I hope you get to say the same thing once done with your cleaning too.

Here is how two of my windows looked after cleaning as they dried.

This window had one large water drip down the middle.

And as for this window, it had a lot of wet spots.

Hacks For Stubborn Stains or Streaks

That’s it! You are now done. The remaining water will sheet off, leaving clean streak-free windows. You won’t believe your eyes. It’ll be a dream come true for you.

How does it feel to have clean sparkly windows? Sure feels heavenly. Once I am done cleaning, I usually make myself a nice cup of coffee, mocha preferably. As a pat on my back and sit on the porch and admire the good work a grandma was able to do with her windows. I managed to do. You can steal my idea of celebrating yourself after a good cleaning break.

Hey this is Carole from My Kitchen Escapades and personally, I was “blessed” with the ability to sweat and stink within the first few seconds of my workouts. Currently, I am a Les Mills BODYPUMP instructor and I always wonder what my class members think when they see me dripping with sweat just a few minutes into the hour. Oh well…..I guess they can’t doubt whether or not I am working hard

Between BODYPUMP and training for whatever race is next on the calendar, my workout gear gets used almost daily and because that part of my wardrobe was such an expensive investment, I am very careful about how I wash those clothes. Here are my favorite tips I’ve learned over the years!

5 Simple Solutions for Stinky Workout Clothes

1. Presoak Your Clothes – it is really simple to do and makes a world of difference. Just combine 1 C of plain, cheap white vinegar with a couple gallons of cold water and let your clothes soak in that mixture for an hour. The vinegar does a great job of breaking down the built up sweat, dead skin (gross) and dirt. When the hour is up, just gently squeeze out your clothes before tossing them in the washing machine. No need to rinse them! This is perfectly safe on all types of fabrics so don’t be afraid of doing this with your expensive compression clothing.

2. Toss Out the Fabric Softener – I know this seems illogical because your fabric softener does such a great job making all your other clothes smell better, BUT it is one of the biggest offenders on multiple levels when it comes to work out clothes. First off, the fabric softener leaves a small coating all over the fibers of your clothes which only traps the smells and oils even more. Secondly, fabric softener KILLS the elasticity of your favorite, mega-expensive running tights. Any workout gear that own that has stretch or support will slowly be ruined with fabric softener. Instead, just use some white vinegar in your fabric softener dispenser. It is a natural softener and as mentioned above, does a great job removing stink instead of trapping it, without damaging the elasticity and hold of your clothes.

3. Toss Out Your Dryer – Again, this one is a multiple offender. The heat of your dryer does nothing good for expensive work out gear. Nothing! The heat ruins the stretch and support of performance gear and shrinks your favorite Nike running shirt that you paid way too much for. The best drying solution for exercise gear? A good old fashioned outdoor clothing line provides the air drying your clothes need without any damage to the fibers, plus the direct sunlight will help kill any lingering odors from your last yoga class.

4. Supplement Your Washing Detergent – For myself, my sweat is killer enough that every few months, I have to break out my strongest anti-stink weapon, 2Toms Stink Free Detergent. I don’t use this on a regular basis because it is a bit pricey and the above mentioned options work for me most weeks. There are quite a few different brands of sports laundry detergent but this one just happens to be the one that works best for me. 5. Wash Your Exercise Clothes Separately – This may not seem important, but I have ruined some expensive gear washing it with other clothes. When you only have your workout clothes in a load, you can be sure that all the above mentioned items are done correctly and no zippers or buttons from other clothes are going to snag your expensive running tights. You can always do this by hand as well if you don’t want to run a small load in your large washer.

So today, I am going to introduce you to a great, new product.

Vinegar.

Oh, but not just regular vinegar.

Have you ever heard of Cleaning Vinegar?  Neither had I until I pinned this pin from Cupcakes and Crinoline.

Cleaning Vinegar has 6% acidity instead of the 5% acidity found in regular vinegar.  And guess what? That little 1% difference boosts all the good attributes of vinegar by 20%! **Note** This vinegar is not for food consumption.

So what does this cleaning vinegar do?  Well apparently there are a lot of uses, but the one I wanted to focus on today is that it can remove hard water deposits in a jiffy!

All you need to do is pour some salt into a small bowl and then add just a splash of cleaning vinegar. You need just enough to make a paste.

Apply your vinegar and salt paste to the areas affected by the hard water deposits and let sit for, oh, let’s say about 10-15 minutes.

Next, you need to rub the paste into the affected areas and rinse with warm water. Then stand back to admire your sparkling cleaning faucet with no hard water deposits!

Now to be fair to the test of this pin, there were a couple of stubborn water deposits so I took a sponge that had a rough side to it and scrubbed a little, but the deposits still came off fairly easily.

Wow. Look at that! This is a great way to remove hard water deposits naturally with no chemicals.  I got so excited that I immediately ran and applied this process to my kitchen sink faucet and then forgot to take pictures!  I wish you could have seen how beautiful that turned out.

Cleaning vinegar can be found in the cleaning section of your store and also in the aisle with the rest of the vinegars.  I purchased mine at Wal-Mart.

What is the grey lint of your hairbrush?

Have you noticed a grey mossy thing on your hairbrush? These are dead skin cells, skin tissue, dirt, hair product, and dust that accumulate on your hairbrush over time. This buildup makes it difficult to brush properly.

In fact, if you don’t clean that bacteria and residues from your brush, it goes back to your scalp and spreads on your hair. This may cause reduced hair volume and make your hair look greasy.

When is the time to clean your hairbrush?

Take a good look at your hairbrush. Does it look clean to you? Actually, if you’re not entirely sure, give it a good wash first. Then begin styling your hair. Repeat once in a while, every time you feel necessary.

Do you have one of these days when your hair doesn’t look good? You don’t know what is wrong, but it doesn’t stay in the right direction. Then you decide to tie it up and leave the house this way.

The reason may be dirty hair tools. If you style your hair with a hairbrush that is not completely clean, it can make your hair look greasy and dirty.

I highly recommend you remove any old hair from the brush after every use. This task is not time-consuming, don’t forget it. This way, you will be sure that it is ready for the next brushing.

If you forget to do it, you may put dirt and dead skin cells on your hair. Surely, it is not something you want. Like every other beauty tool, this also needs good care. 

Why do you need to brush your hair?

Do you tend to neglect to brush your hair? It is like a massage for the scalp. It encourages blood flow and hair growth. Brushing every day helps remove loose hair. And there will be some loose hair, don’t worry about it, it is perfectly normal. Also, it helps remove any tangles. 

It is recommended you brush your hair twice a day – morning and night. It helps distribute the scalp’s natural oils through the hair. There is no need to do it more often. It is a chance of over-brushing your hair that may damage your cuticles. And that is not a good thing to do. So keep it simple, and brush it twice a day for maximum results.

Try to make it a habit! After styling your hair, take care of your hairbrush. It is that simple!

• Remove all of the hair left on the brush after use.
• Use warm water and a little bit of shampoo to clean it.
• Clean your hairbrush as often as possible, at least once a month.
• Keep combs and hairbrushes in a separate cosmetic bag from your other beauty tools.
• Don’t keep combs and hairbrushes on shelves. They can easily get covered with dust.
• Disinfect your brushes with a sanitizer gel.
• It is a personal beauty tool. Don’t let anyone else use yours. Just like your toothbrush.

How often do you clean your hairbrush?

Do you have that gross and fluffy buildup on your hairbrush that accumulates over time? Stop brushing your hair with it! You have to remove it.

I know that we all have priorities, and we put some of the tasks at the end of the list. They often remain to wait for a long time. But this has to change. 

For instance, make a schedule for cleaning your beauty tools. A good wash once a month will make them look new. You won’t feel embarrassed if your grandkids or somebody else sees your hairbrush. 

I don’t know if you are like me or not, but there are chores, cleaning projects, and things that I need to organize, and I think, “I am going to do that today.” But then I don’t.

And then the next day, I think, “I am definitely going to do that TODAY!”

But then I don’t.

And before I know it, a week has passed. Or maybe even a month. But that’s all I’m going to confess.

No, I would never let anything that I need to clean go past a month.

No, I would not.

Never.

Recently I have been feeling that way about my hairbrush. I saw that fluffy lint buildup on it and felt the need to clean it as soon as possible.

I had to clean it a day ago.

Or maybe it was a week ago.

Could it really have been a month?

Ewww.

How to clean your brush in minutes?

Luckily today was the day I cleaned my hairbrush! I feel much better now!

This cleaning project that I have been thinking about for days, got done today. It is thanks to a pin that I pinned from Anithamallya’s Blog.

I’ve adapted the instructions a little bit, but here is how to clean your brush in minutes. And it works great! Get your hairbrush and try it.

You will need:

• scissors
• warm water
• shampoo
• toothbrush

Instructions:

1. Take some scissors, cut the hair in the brush lengthwise down every 2nd or 3rd row. Make sure you are cutting in between the bristles.

2. Take the tip of the scissors and slide the scissors lengthwise underneath the hair and lift. The hair should lift right up. Continue until you remove all the hair. Pull off any loose stragglers.

Tip: Do not use a comb or another brush to remove the hair from your brush! It usually pops off the small beads that are on the top of your bristles. Once those beads are gone, it sure doesn’t feel good when brushing your hair.

3. Now, after removing most of the bulky hair, there is still dander and dust on your brush. Set it in a sink that has some warm water mixed with a small amount of shampoo.

4. Take a spare toothbrush. Brush vigorously up and down each row of your hairbrush and also all around the top.

5. Set on a paper towel to dry, and your brush should look like new.

Easy peasy! And doesn’t take much of your time. 

Helpful tips for a healthy and beautiful hair

How to maintain and style your hair? It needs some special treatment once in a while. Conditioners, hair masks, and serums help the hair to maintain its strength. Treat yourself to some good products.

Also, don’t forget that hydration is the key to healthy hair. Drinking a lot of water helps your hair look pretty.

On the other hand, some of the hair products may contain toxic ingredients. You have to read the labels carefully.

• Stay hydrated! Drinking at least 2 liters of water has beneficial effects on your hair strength and growth.
• The wet hair is thin and can break easily. Try not to brush it until it is completely dry.
• Don’t tousle your hair with a towel, this may create tangles.
• Use conditioner and other hydrating hair products.
• Untangle in sections and carefully. Try not to damage or break the hair.
• Use shampoos and conditioners that are suitable for your hair type.
• Read the labels. Try to avoid products with toxic ingredients such as sulfates, parabens, and other chemicals. 

In conclusion

In short, cleaning your beauty accessories is important because they come in contact with your skin and hair. The hairbrush is no different. 

If you want to maintain healthy and beautiful hair, you need to clean it once a month. Otherwise, you may be brushing your hair with dirt, grease, and product. Undoubtedly, the results will not be so good. 

Make sure you style your hair with clean beauty tools only. What is more, brushing makes your hair look pretty, helps remove loose hair and tangles. But to experience the benefits, you have to do it with a clean brush. Anyone can do this method, and it is totally worth it!

Often when I ask my kids why they put a certain thing on their Christmas wish list they wouldn’t really know why they wanted it, other than it was what everybody wants. If that many cool kids want the same thing, it has to be good!

This has been an exciting year for us here at MFP. Testing and trying out pins from Pinterest has been an adventure for us three sisters. When we began this blog just over a year ago, we worried that we would be drawn to the same projects and we would have problems with duplication. But you will see from our top ten, that the things that struck our fancy have been an eclectic collection of household tips and  and kitchen hints.

But today is about new beginnings. So in celebration of the New Year, we are sharing with you the best of the best, the creme de la creme of all the things we have tried. My husband absolutely loves when it is my week to post here at madefrompinterest because he knows he will be in for some great stuff! Whether it is a new dinner recipe or some new fangled dessert, he is happy to be experimented upon!

In his own male way, he has endorsed and embraced Pinterest and the other day he was wondering if there was anything on Pinterest that showed how to clean the protective cover over his car headlights.

Why yes, honey. Yes there is!

Taking instructions from a pin that I pinned from Snapguide, the best thing about the directions is that it takes only one ingredient.  And that one ingredient is………toothpaste!

Our local grocery store had a sale on Crest toothpaste for $1.00 so I grabbed a tube and off I went to tackle our headlights.  With a paper towel, I covered the entire headlight area with the toothpaste.  Then I took a sponge that had a rough side on one side and lightly rubbed over this area.

Wash the toothpaste off with some warm water and look at the results!This little favor made the hubster so excited!  You know how men are about their cars.  And now he loves Pinterest even more!

All you have to do is put your iron on a low setting. I had to wait for mine to cool off! Put down a towel or other fabric to protect your ironing board from your iron, and possibly your iron from your ironing board if you got sticky stuff all over it. I need a new iron cover now. Next, get a dryer sheet and iron over it until all the sticky stuff is gone. Your iron will have an oily residue that needs to be wiped off with a clean cloth, and you are good to go! This is a great tip from Make It Do.

Just get a dish washing wand and fill the dispenser half with vinegar and half with liquid dish soap.  Keep it in the shower. That way everything is ready to go.  When you get in, wet the sponge, and scrub away.  Next, well, take a shower.  That’s it.  I do a little section of the shower each day and work my way around the whole area about twice a week.

If the mixture gets thick, just add a little water. Also, Marge cautions that it is important to rinse well, and keep out of eyes.

After reading the oh-so-not-complicated directions on wikiHow, my coke goes into the basin.  In the original instructions, it said to leave for an hour but for “extra cleaning power” leave overnight.  Once again.  How is easy is this?  Coke goes in.  I go to bed.  THIS IS MY KINDA CLEANING!

In the morning, I was giddy thinking about being able to flush this toilet and have it be sparkling clean!  Darn. I knew “giddiness” couldn’t last forever.  Here are my before and after pictures.  Now before you look at this,  I am going to raise my right hand in the air with my left hand on the bible and swear that I allowed this toilet to get these hard water stains just for the purpose of this post and that our commodes NEVER get like this. EVER. Okay I feel better.Does it look to you like the second picture is WORSE????  Yeah, me too.  I’m pretty sure the hard water deposits soaked up the coke color and made the ring worse.   Definitely NOT MY KINDA CLEANING.   And such good Coke gone to waste. Sigh…
