Kite Cake Topper

Paula Biggs here, posting from over at the party I like to call Frog Prince Paperie. We’ll celebrate just about anything over there. Like it being March. Windy, gusty, perfect for kite flying March. I understand there is a bit of snow up north that’s probably going to prevent any wild romps through the fields dragging kites along, so I’m going to suggest staying inside for now. Bake yourself up a nice cake (this one is my ultimate carrot cake recipe!) and add some wind-blown clouds and kites for a bit of whimsy on a blustry day. They only take about 10 minutes to make, and are the perfect thing to bring on a few celebratory smiles.

My inspiration for this quick-to-make project came from Nikki at Tikkido. She’s got some good stuff over there. But the pin that inspired wasn’t kite related at all, it was for a Valentines Day Cake Topper. All the scrapbook hearts bursting out of the cake were just darling! And she even made suggestions as to other things the method might be good for — like making kites!

How to Make a Kite Cake Topper

To make yourself a breezy kite and cloud topped cake, you’ll need a few materials:

  • Assorted scrapbook papers
  • Bamboo skewers
  • Cording or ribbon
  • Hot glue or tape

This is a free-form sort of project, so cut out a few clouds making some fluffy, some flat, some big, some small. There is no wrong way here. Do the same with the kites. If it makes you more comfortable, draw one kite and cut it out to use as a template for all the others.

After you’ve got them cut out, simply tape or hot glue the bamboo skewers to the back of the kites and clouds.

For a little extra embellishment, cut pieces of cording (it stands up better) or ribbon to create tails on the kites. Cut tiny bows for the bottoms and you’ve got a sweet cake topper on your hands.

The imperfection in the cutting and the variety of the scrap paper are what makes this so neat–so no need to be super perfect when you’re making these kites and clouds! Kite-cake-topper-fly-a-kite

Poke your clouds and kites into the top of your cake. I find I have to cut the bamboo skewers (scissors work great) to get heights right in the paper pieces. But once they are all lined up? Kite-flying bliss! It’s a sunny way to brighten up a cake – whatever the celebration!
