Hey Y’all!  Mandee here from The Kitchen Wife and I love buttermilk.  Buttermilk is one of the most magical things that has ever happened to cooking!  From making your cakes super moist, to tenderizing your chicken for frying, it’s applications are endless.   The only problem is that you usually have to buy a half gallon, only to use a couple of cups.  So what do you do with the rest?  I’m so glad you ask.  Let me show you How to Freeze Buttermilk to use in later recipes!  It’s a genius kitchen hack and I know you’re going to love it!
Buttermilk is one of the most magical things that has ever happened to cooking! From making your cakes super moist, to tenderizing your chicken for frying, it's applications are endless. The only problem is that you usually have to buy a half gallon, only to use a couple of cups. So what do you do with the rest? I'm so glad you ask. Let me show you How to Freeze Buttermilk to use in later recipes!

To begin I get out my muffin tin.  This provides the perfect half cup portion.  I simply pour the buttermilk into each compartment, place the muffin pan on a baking sheet, and freeze overnight.

In the morning, I remove the muffin pan from the freezer, let sit on the counter for five minutes, and the frozen buttermilk cubes pop right out!  How cute are these perfect half cup portions!?!

Next place the cubes in a resealable bag.  I like to write how much each cube is.  When you are ready, melt and use in what ever dish you need!   It’s that simple!  It’s simple kitchen tricks like this one that help up save time and money.  So give it a try soon!

And as always…

Thanks for the idea! I don’t like wasting food. I was trying to think of something to make with my leftover buttermilk, but I really don’t have time to cook this week. Now I can freeze it and use when I have time to cook.

This is great, thank you. I only use buttermilk a few times a year and I always feel bad wasting it when I do buy it. I will be buying it in about a week to make a fancy birthday cake for the man of the house (his favorite is a German Chocolate recipe that has like two days worth of steps lol). It uses buttermilk but even the smallest amount I can buy is far too much! I’ll be freezing the rest of it. Thanks!

Can you freeze half and half and heavy cream in ice cube trays too?
