It’s so fun when you find a cute and amazing tutorial for an easy circle skirt that you can make in almost no time at all. Circle skirts are so much fun and there’s really not much to it!

I love this circle skirt tutorial I pinned by Dana from Made (she’s fabulous!), and today I’m sharing what a fun and easy project it really is–even if you don’t sew much!

I got started by creating my pattern using Dana’s tutorial which was really easy to follow. It only took 2 measurements and about 5 minutes to make.

Then I cut out my skirt from some striped knit fabric and chose a fun gold elastic for a waistband.

I followed the tutorial as is except that since I used knit, I chose not to hem it–you’ve gotta love knit for the no-fray feature.

I paired it with a super cute little pair of orange sandals and a white sweater, and this little girl is ready for church or play. It’s super comfy and amazingly adorable for the time it took to create. So go check it out, and come find other fun sewing projects at Mabey She Made It like these:

One of my favorite bloggers, Merrick’s Art, made this adorable DIY Cape and I couldn’t wait to make my own. I made a couple changes to her tutorial to make it more of a sweater poncho than a cape:

You need:

1 yard fabric {I LOVE how easy Girl Charlee knits are to use. I made one with French Terry, Haachi Sweater & Jersey Knit}

Sewing Machine and/or Serger

Scissors

• Lay your fabric so that the longest side is folded in half. This fabric is 60″ wide by 36″ long so when it’s folded in half it should be 36″ wide by 30″ long. 
• Cut down the middle of just the top layer. If you cut both layers it will be ruined!

• {optional} serge all around the edges, rounding edges as you go. With Girl Charlee knits they won’t fray so you can leave them unfinished if you like.
• Fold back in half, right sides together, and sew from the middle to the bottom of the fabric to create your arm holes.

Style with your favorite jeans and tee shirt for a casual look.

When it comes to raising kids, I am one of the luckiest gals around. One of the reasons I am so lucky is that I am the baby of the family, which means, I have the good fortune to benefit from Debbie (the Oldest) and Tracy’s (the Middle Child) parenting experience. Here is one of my favorite tips from Debbie: Say “Yes” as often as you can. Make your “No’s” really count for something. Save them for when you really need them. I have used this advice so many times and been so glad I did. I have great teenagers and love my relationship with them. They are pretty respectful when I say no, maybe because I try not to say it too often.

This advice came in handy when my daughter wanted to buy that “perfect” pair of jeans. I have to admit, they were cute, but they had that ripped, hanging by a thread look that my mommy instincts were wanting to say no to. In the end, I decided to save my “no” for another occasion. And I was glad I did. Big deal, the threads covered the hole and it was cute and trendy. But then…a few threads broke, and then more, and then it was just a hole. Now remember, I am trying to reserve those “no’s” for when I really need them. No you cannot wear your favorite pair of jeans anymore was not going to win me any popularity contests. Not that I am trying to win a popularity contest with my kids. But I do want my kids to know that when I do say no, it is with good reason, it means something, and they had better listen. When the hole started getting bigger, as in, I am nervous that the jeans are going to split right open bigger, that “No” that was just about ready to come out of my mouth.

But then I remembered a pin I had on my Good Things to Sew Board that showed how to repair jeans with a lace inset.  This great idea from The Forge is so clever! If I were to do a patch, it wouldn’t blend in so well. I thought about a fun piece of fabric, but then it might not match with everything, which is part of the fun with jeans. But lace? Fabulous! The look is similar to how they were originally, with a little touch of personality and style. And even if you aren’t a seamstress, this is in your wheelhouse.

You will need a small piece of lace, scissors, sandpaper, thread and fusible bonding web.

First, I turned the jeans inside out, and cut a piece of lace big enough to cover the hole. Then, I put a four strips of fusible bonding web around the hole from the backside.   Next, I laid the lace on top and ironed it on.  Using blue thread on top and white thread in the bobbin, I zigzag stitched around the hole for extra security.  Then I trimmed away the excess and sanded the cut edges so they would have that worn look. Awesome! Now the hole is protected from getting bigger, my baby is not showing so much skin, my budget is happy, and I have another “No” held in reserve for when I really need it.

This hereditary pin rocks because it is in your jeans! Lame pun; great pin!

The 4th of July was a holiday that I always looked forward to when I was growing up.  My family had a boat and if you want to hear a funny story about our family boat, check out my sister’s Sherri’s post here!

Anyway, our family would always  take our  boat out to Catalina Island off the Southern California coast for the 4th of July weekend.  But before we left, our Dad would buy the boxes of Black Cat or Red Devil fireworks.   After we got there and the sun went down, we could hardly wait for it to be dark enough for fireworks!   Dad had a long plank of wood that he would nail the fireworks onto one end, then he would light it and then quickly push the plank out so that the fireworks would go off over the water but far enough away from our boat.  He then would pull the plank back in, get another firework ready, light it and then push it out again.  It was the best fun ever.

My love of holidays has not faded through the years and it has been so much fun to celebrate holidays now that I have grandchildren!  A couple of weeks ago I got to visit my two grandsons and was excited to make these 4th of July Kids Tee Shirts with them.  This would be a darling idea for the whole family to make and wear on the 4th of July!

The paint that we used for these tee shirts were Americana Acrylic Paints in Primary Red and True Blue.

Pouring the True Blue paint out on  a paper plate, place your child’s hand in the paint.  Make sure each and every finger gets paint on it!

Then try to spread their fingers out as much as you can and place their hand on the tee shirt, pressing down each finger firmly.  Little brother is a little over one year old and it was a challenge to get him to spread his fingers out!

And now it’s Big Brothers turn!

Then with the Primary Red color, paint the flag stripes around the blue hand print.  I love the the roughness of the lines that Big Brother painted!

Now they are both ready for the 4th of July!

Oh, and do you see the little star on Little Brother’s shirt?

Yeah, Big Brother decided that Little Brother  needed a little help and helped him out in the form of a blue fingerprint on his tee shirt!  So we just made a star out of it and think it looks just fine!  Besides what’s more American than a star?

No matter where or how you do your fireworks, your family will be ready in these super easy and fun 4th of July Tee Shirts!

Is it really that bad to lie? These shoes are liars. Pretenders. Fakes. Faux is a nicer word. But at the end of the day, they are not what they are trying to look like they are.

And I am okay with it.

Because they cost me less than 10 bucks. And they are cute.

Is it really a lie if the lie is so obvious, that  anyone can spot it? Like these DIY Oxfords. You know they are not really oxfords.

Right?

I was raised by a liar. The best liar. He told me a whopper that was so obvious I should have spotted it.

I didn’t.

I was a grown woman before my husband spotted it for me. And had great fun pointing it out to me. To this day, it is one of “our” stories. Every couple has those stories you pull out at parties when you want to be entertaining. Because the truth is, it is down right funny. Laugh out loud funny. Hysterical, really.

Even I have to admit it. Even though it makes me look like a ditz.

Here’s the deal. I grew up a very rich kid. And I didn’t know it. Had no idea.

Because Dad lied.

I believed a whopper the size of a whale until I was a grown woman. I defended this lie vehemently because I believed in it so much.

It all started when we were having dinner with friends.

I am sorry, you came here to learn how to make a pair of oxfords. Start with a pair of plain white tennis shoes. I got mine at Walmart for 5 bucks. Take out the shoelaces.

I was telling our friends at dinner how much fun we used to have as a family living in Southern California going to Catalina Island for the weekend.

In our boat.

My husband was interested in the details. Where did we sleep?

On the boat.

He is thinking ski boat, where the seats pull out into beds. No, I tell him. There were beds. Real beds. He thinks there is a small cabin below deck.

I tell  how my dad was an amazing boat driver. Mom used to bring her card club friends out on the boat when it was her turn to host. Sometimes one of the cards would float away in the breeze. Dad was such a good boatman, he could get close enough to the card floating on the water so that mom could lean over and pick it up.

My husband is not interested in Dad’s captain abilities. He is stuck on card club.

You are stuck on shoes. So am I. When I found this post from Amy Belgradt at Mom Spark, I knew I needed to make a pair. Pencil in your design on the shoe.

“How could they play cards on the boat?” My hubby wants to know. “On their laps?” he asked. No. Folding tables. We set them up on the deck. My dad was crazy, amazing piloting that boat.

My husband is not interested in Dad. He says, “Did you say tables? As in plural, more than one?”

He is annoying me with his attention to trivial details. Yes, there was more than one. Three, maybe four. I don’t really remember.

He interrupts me again.

He feels three or four card tables on the deck means this is a really big boat. It was seafaring. It was bigger than a ski boat, but not huge, I tell him. I have moved on to telling him about the time we saw whales on the way to Catalina.

By the way, you are going to need acrylic paint, paint brushes, and spray protectant for your shoes. This project is so easy. Just paint the shoes. You can add fabric medium to the paint, but I didn’t bother. I used a light kahki and white paint.  Paint your shoes following the design you drew. I dipped the end of the paint brush into paint and dabbed it on to make the dots. I got a little seasick and started following the stitching line instead of the paint line. It adds character, see? I painted the tongue last. Let the paint dry a few hours and then seal with spray for shoes following the directions. I used Kiwi Protect All Rain And Stain Repellant .

Now my husband wants to know what we did if we had to go to the bathroom while we were making the trip, or in the middle of the night. The boat had a small bathroom.

I try to get the conversation back to the whales.

“Boats don’t have bathrooms. I think it was a yacht.”

My husband has a thing about interrupting good stories.

Little girl that I was, I thought the whales were small islands. I spotted them first and pointed them out to my dad. They were big enough you could walk on them. Dad was kind of nervous about the whales.

“What about eating?”

He was interrupting again! Annoying much?  The whales weren’t eating. They were just swimming.

“No, what did you eat on these weekends to Catalina?” he wanted to know. Abalone. My dad and his friends loved to catch them and cook them up fresh, but I thought they were rubbery and gross.

“Where did they cook them?”

Now we were getting to what my husband was driving at. “Was there a kitchen on the boat?”

Of course not! There was, however, a small sink, fridge and stove that Mom and Dad called the galley.

“That’s a yacht!” My husband is persistent.

I explain the technicalities as Dad explained them to me. The official length for a boat to be a yacht is 43 feet. Our boat, The Ranger II, a top of the line Hatteras, was 42 feet and therefore under the legal limit to be considered a yacht.

That’s a whopper.

A whale of a tale.

I bought it hook, line and sinker.

I guess Dad thought that snooty girls who knew the truth were worse than down to earth girls who were gullible.

So he lied.

And I believed it, well in to my twenties.

If I tell you that oxfords are technically a low heeled shoe with laces, therefore these shoes legally qualify as oxfords, do you believe me?

I found a lovely pin from Poppytalk for DIY clay rings and decided to try them out.  This project was so fun to do and really inexpensive.  I even made my own clay to cut down costs.  After trying out this pin I would have to rate it a definite success.  Here’s how I made my DIY clay rings!

What you’ll need:

• Knife or Exacto Knife
• Clay
• Ring mold (I used this whisk because it was about the same diameter as my finger)

I first laid out some clay into a pancake and then cut out a thin strip that would wrap around my finger.

After I cut my strips out I wrapped them around the whisk gently blending the two ends together.

After the rings dried I used metallic spray paint to make them stand out.

I seriously love these rings!  I wore them for 10 minutes and got 2 compliments! You gotta try these.

As a teenage girl in New Jersey – complete with my Farah Fawcett wanna-be hairstyle – I worked at the mall. As did many of my high school classmates and 16-year-old peers.

My first job in the food court serving up Greek food was short-lived. The free food was doing nothing to help my waistline, and the aroma of onions and beef and lamb in my hair … my clothes … my pores … was doing nothing to help my love life.

Luckily, my second job at the mall was in jewelry store. A high-end jewelry store, in fact. Filled with sparkling jewels. Sparkling jewels this New Jersey teenage girl coveted. Drooled over. And tried on over and over again when the store was slow.

Needless to say, a good portion of my paychecks were reinvested in the store.

If only I knew then what I know now. That you can make your own sparkling jewels for a fraction of the cost. Using plain old marbles. I first spotted the idea on this Pinterest pin …

You start by baking them in the oven at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes …

Then you immediately dump them in ice cold water. Ice cold water in a metal container …

The temperature difference makes them crack on the inside …

but not the outside.

Pretty cool, right?

Now for the tricky part. Turning this into a necklace.

Oh how I wish I had worked in the service center of that jewelry store!

Instead, I turned to Pinterest once again. And found this pin that led to an excellent tutorial.

So, I started with some supplies I found in the jewelry department of my local craft store.

Per those excellent instructions I found on Pinterest (complete with pictures too), I thread the eye pin through the ball cap. Then I cut the excess eye pin wire and created a loop inside the ball cap to hold it in place. At this point, there may have been some cursing. And frustration. And digging through the tool box hoping we had a second pair of needle nose pliers.

After lots of glue and a giant mess, I ended up with this …

I added jump rings (the two needle nose pliers strategy worked here too).

And strung them up on cording and chains.

Voila. Now you have a unique sparkling jewel necklace that you definitely won’t find at the mall …

I found an adorable tutorial to make diy jeweled bobby pins and had to try them.  These diy jeweled bobby pins were definitely a pin that rocked.  They were extremely easy to make and spiffed up my bobby pins that I had lying around.

Here are the tools you’ll need for this project:

• Jewels
• Bobby Pins
• E600 Glue

The first step is to arrange the rhinestones in the shape that you want.  If you’d like, you can just glue on one rhinestone to the bobby pin.  I let the rhinestones dry before gluing them to the bobby pin.

The next step is to glue the rhinestones to the bobby pin.

Here is the finished product!

To begin, put a little dab of glue on the end of the headband and glue the end of the thread to secure. Then, begin wrapping the embroidery thread over the end to cover the glue. Continue wrapping, making sure not to overlap the strands.

To add a second color, glue down one end of thread where you want a new color to begin. Cover the glued second color (I added gold) of thread by wrapping over it with the first color (my first color was purple). 

For double color or striped effect, begin wrapping the two colors at the same time. When you reach the end of the area where you want two colors, return to one color by gluing down the end of the second color (gold in this instance) and covering it by wrapping over it with the first color (Purple here).
Part of the fun of this kit is that there are so many ways to get creative. For my next headband, I decided to embellish the gold thread with pearl beads. First, I wrapped the entire headband in gold. Then I laid the beads down where I wanted them and wrapped once in between each bead. This secured beads perfectly and at the other end I finished off by gluing the thread, waiting to dry and trimming.

I used the same technique to create the black and diamond headband, but instead of putting the diamonds over the whole headband, I put them at the top.

Once I got started, I had so many ideas of different combinations. Black and gold with pearls would be beautiful. Pearls and diamonds on the same headband? You bet! You are only limited by your own creativity.
