I have a confession. I love Harry Potter. No, I mean it. I really, really love Harry Potter. It’s not that I’m not in love with Harry Potter. There’s just something about the change in the weather to cooler temperatures and the sound of leaves crunching underfoot that makes me take a step back and look at the world around me with fresh eyes.  I think that’s why I love this quote from F. Scott Fitzergerald’s The Great Gatsby so much:

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”

I thought it was the perfect sentiment to share alongside a fall vignette.  So….we turned it into a printable that is perfectly sized for an 8×10 frame!

I had fun finding some touches of fall to put around my framed quote.  I shopped my house and one of my favorite grocery stores to put together this little Autumn display.

The vase is a favorite find from Target last spring.  I love the little yellow sculpted flower–it reminds me of a chrysanthemum or dahlia!  Since the printable is so literary, I had to have some books nearby.  I pick up vintage Reader’s Digest Condensed books whenever I find them at thrift shops, because the covers have such pretty colors and patterns.  I drew a pile of pumpkins on my chalkboard.  Since fall foliage isn’t very spectacular in my area, I keep a few of these fabric leaves on hand to use in my Fall decor every year.  The flowers and gourds came from Trader Joe’s.  (In case you haven’t heard, they have incredible prices on fresh flowers!)

See those teeny-tiny pumpkins?  They actually come on branches, and they are known as pumpkin trees.  They are a type of ornamental eggplant.  Who knew?  I think they are adorable, and so fun to decorate with throughout the harvest season.  I think they are sold by many florists, but you can definitely find them at Trader Joe’s, this time of year.

With the 4th of July fast approaching (can you believe THAT?!) we have a fun and easy craft to bring some American color into your home and your kids can even help too!

Just take a look at these darling 4th of July Mason Jar Candles!

Here’s what you will need to get started:

Pint or quart sized mason jars

White long grain rice

Food coloring (I used Wilton True Blue and Red Gel Coloring)

Ziploc baggies

Votive or tealight candles

Instructions:

Pour your rice into a Ziploc baggie.  Then add your food coloring, zip real tight and shake away!  Or you could also put the rice and food coloring into a separate mason jar, screw the lid on and let your kids shake away!  It’s that easy to color rice.  Add more food coloring if you want your rice to be a darker color.

If you let your kids “shake away” with the Ziploc baggies, be prepared to have rice shaken all over your kitchen.

This did not happen to me when I made these.

No it did not.

Okay yes it did.

And I’m an adult.

Sometimes.

I think I had a little too much fun shaking.

Once your rice is ready, starting with the red rice, scoop the rice into your mason jars.  I put about 1/2 to 2/3 cups of rice for each layer into the pint jars and about 1 to 1 1/2 cups into the quart jars.  It’s all up to you!

Top with a tealight or votive candle and you are ready to go.

This literally took minutes to create but look at the results!

I love the flag in these pictures, this is the flag my 24 year old son was awarded when he earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts Of America. His 11 year old brother is currently working towards earning his Eagle Scout award.

Over the years I have had the privilege of being my son’s scout leader. One thing I have come to appreciate is how the BSA teaches my boys about our country’s history and to understand our governmental system.

I’m most appreciative that my sons have learned to love their country and what it means truly be patriotic. As soon as my oldest son turned 18 he signed up for the Selective Service System. He was excited and proud when his SSS ID card came in the mail.

I love to see the respect my youngest son shows for the flag when he “Posts the Colors” at Pack meeting. At the age of 11 years old he understands why “Posting the Colors” is an honor and a privilege. At the age of 11 years old he also enjoys fireworks, sparklers and fun treats like these 4th of July Ice Cream Cones from Amy at Designer of all Things Cute!

Supplies

• Colored chocolate candy melts
• Ice cream cones
• 4th of July sprinkles
• Ice Cream
• Chocolate Magic Shell
• Cherries
• Whip Cream

Making these ice cream cones is quick and easy.

Simply melt some colored chocolate candy melts in a bowl, dip the ice cream cones in the melted chocolate. Shake off the excess chocolate, shake on some 4th of July sprinkles and the ice cream cones are done! Scoop your ice cream ahead of time and place the scoops on a cookie sheet and return to the freezer. When you are ready to serve them, remove the scoops from your freezer, place the ice cream scoops on the ice cream cones. Pour some magic shell over them, place a dollop of whip cream and cherry on top. Serve and enjoy! A treat this easy……….

We can’t pass up any excuse to celebrate and have had great Mardi Gras, Chinese New Year and Cinco de Mayo celebrations to name a few.  When my kids were growing up they also used to love St. Patrick’s Day.  The whole day was filled with green food from breakfast to dinner and I wish that I had found this pin for Jello Ice Cream Shamrocks from Creative Food way back then.  My kids would have loved it and now yours can too!

The fun thing about this recipe is that after you mix everything together, while it is cooling the ice cream rises to the top to make a fun layer. Oh and if you see any little black specks on the Jello, I promise it isn’t dirt!  I used a vanilla bean ice cream and those are specks of vanilla bean. Phew.  I knew you were worried.

I’m sure you could make these in any flavor and cut with any shape of cookie cutter.   The possibilities are endless. But for the time being, these will be on our menu for our St. Patrick’s Day dinner!  Top of the mornin’ to ya cause This Pin Rocks!

Jello Ice Cream Shamrocks

Course Dessert

Ingredients

• 2 packages of 3 oz green lime Jello or one 6 oz box.
• 1 package knox unflavored gelatin
• 4 cups boiling water
• Approx 1 qt or less vanilla bean ice cream

Instructions

• Boil the four cups of water. After it reaches a hard boil, add the lime Jello and gelatin and mix well until everything is dissolved. Add the ice cream and mix until the ice cream is melted.
• Pour into a 9x13 pan and put in the refrigerator to cool.
• Let set for about 4 hours but overnight is best.
• When completely set, cut with desired cookie cutter and take out of the pan with a spatula. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Make sure to eat the leftovers!

Well, it’s finally time for the big game.  I really do like the Super Bowl.  I love having people over, I love the food, I love the commercials, I understand the game, but I don’t really care who wins.  I pretty much root for the team whose uniforms I like the best.   So I just asked my husband who he wanted to win and he said the Bronco’s.  I then told him that I looked at both teams uniforms online and I liked the Seahawks uniform much better than Denver’s.  Looks we are going to be at war during this Superbowl!

I mean – watch football.

All.

Day.

Long.

I have a friend whose husband is employed as a Physicist.  MAJOR INTELLIGENT GUY.   And when he comes home from work, all he wants to do is crash on the couch and watch tv.

Preferably…

Football

I can imagine that maybe his brain is fried from work and he probably wants to come home and think about nothing.

Which is why watching football would be perfect.

To think about…

nothing.

Ouch.

Don’t get me wrong.  I like to watch an occasional football game.  Especially if our local college team is playing.  That CAN get pretty exciting!

And I am secretly proud to say that I do NOT throw a football like a girl!  Time warp back to when I was a teenager and there was this guy that lived across the street and I had such a crush on him and he was on the high school football team.  In order to have to an excuse to talk to him, I asked him to teach me how to throw.   I practiced like crazy and to this day I can throw a pretty good spiral.

Yeah.

I have some football skills.

For me the best part of watching a big game like the Super Bowl is having friends over and eating great food.  Not to mention the commercials.  Have you seen the Old Spice “Mom” commercial yet?  Oh my.  I’m surprised that they didn’t save that one for the Super Bowl!

So in anticipation of the game, I have already made these Super Bowl Almond Joy Footballs.  They are  in my freezer and all I have to do is pull them out to thaw a little and they will be ready to go.   Taking the recipe from  a pin from Greens & Chocolate,  I shaped them into footballs instead of bars or balls.  I think they look so cute!

So if you want to score a touchdown at your Super Bowl party this year, make sure to add these Super Bowl Almond Joy Footballs on the menu.    Your guests will be as impressed as if you just threw a spiral!

Super Bowl Almond Joy Footballs

Ingredients

• 1 cup or 8 oz sweetened condensed milk a little over 1/2 of the 14oz can
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
• 14 oz shredded sweetened coconut
• Whole almonds
• 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
• Paraffin wax
• Vanilla CandiQuik Melts

Instructions

• In a large bowl, mix together the condensed milk and vanilla.
• Next add your powdered sugar making sure that you incorporate well.
• Pour your shredded coconut into this mixture until very well blended.
• Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper. Take your coconut mixture and shape into the shape you desire. Options can be a ball, a bar shape or as in this recipe, into football shapes. Add an almond on the top.
• Put these into your freezer and let freeze for 15-20 minutes. This helps firm up the candy a little bit so it won't be so messy when dipping in the chocolate.
• Melt your chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave but watch carefully so it doesn't burn. If desired, to thin your chocolate out a little bit and make it easier for dipping, you can add 1/8 cup of melted paraffin wax.
• Dip the almond mixture into your chocolate and set on a clean sheet of waxed paper to cool and set.
• After it has set, melt some Vanilla CandiQuik melts in a sandwich size Ziploc bag. Cut a small corner off and use that hole to pipe the lines for the footballs. Candy will set pretty quickly.
• These freeze well but my family doesn't even let them thaw before eating. They say that they like them frozen even better!

Do you love surprises? Yes? Then you will love this idea for cake. Surprise cakes are pretty popular right now. With blueberries, almonds and strawberries on top, you get a  little hint that there might be something special on the inside. Assembling this cake is easier than I would have thought.
I began with four boxes of vanilla cake mix. A cake with this many layers take a ton of frosting and that would have meant purchasing several tubs of the commercial stuff. So I pulled out my  favorite recipe for frosting and doubled it. I used almond extract in mine for this cake and it was delicious with the berries.

I live near several of our nation’s historical sites and living in an area so rich in our nation’s history, you can’t help but be bitten by the history bug. I love the good old red, white and blue. Here are a few flag snippets for you: There are 13 stripes representing the 13 original colonies. 50 stars for the fifty states. Some say red is for valor and zeal, white for hope and purity and blue for loyalty and justice.

Legend has it Washington interpreted the colors something like this: “We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty.”.

To make this cake I baked (2) red layers, (1) white and (1) blue using one box of cake mix for each layer. I colored them using icing gel food coloring. Then I leveled the tops. Next, I cut the red and white layers in half to create enough stripes. Leave the blue layer double height.

I cut a 6 inch circle out of (1) layer each of red, white and the blue. (Next time I will do a 5 inch circle. I wish the blue was a little bigger.) It is important that you trim the samll red and white circles a bit smaller so that the blue ring can fit around those two circles.

This is very important or your blue ring will break and fall off. It is easier to fix if it is too small than if it is too big. Any extra space can be filled in with frosting. You will have left over one blue center circle and a white and red ring. I cut those in squares and put them in the freezer to make parfait out of at a later date. Before assembling the cake I wrapped each layer in plastic wrap and put them in the freezer for about an hour. This makes the layers easier to assemble without them falling apart.  Frost the top of the red layer first. Then again with the white and red. Top with the small white and then small red.
Next, I added the blue ring and frosted the remainder of the cake. Next time I will put the blue ring on first and carefully insert the small red and white layer. Don’t forget not to stretch the blue ring to fit around the small red and white layers. Trim them to fit neatly inside or the ring will break apart. Can you tell I had a little trouble with this? Well you are in luck as these things are in the lineup for this week’s posts as we get closer and closer to America’s Patriotic Holiday!

When I was a teenager, I was able to visit Czechoslovakia when it was still considered behind the “Iron Curtain” and under a communist regime.  I remember being very scared as we went over the border.  We were in our travel bus but had to wait for the bus to be cleared.  As we waited we were instructed not to take any pictures of the border.  Coiled barbed wire topped the cement grey chain link fence.  Soldiers that  wielded guns took the guard dogs to sniff the bus for drugs.  Our bus was relieved of  our luggage as they laid out and opened all of our suitcases to check its contents.

I wanted to go home.

As a young and unseasoned traveler, this experience made me so grateful for the security, liberties and freedoms that I enjoyed in my home country.  It was good for me to see how other people lived and to appreciate the country, as imperfect as it is, in which I grew up.

After my european trip was over, when the plane landed on the runway in the United States of America, I wanted to kiss the ground.  Very few times since have I felt as patriotic as I did then.  And every year when the 4th of July rolls around, this memory refreshes itself in my mind and makes me grateful once again for the life that I have been blessed to lead.

In preparing for the 4th, I was looking for some red, white, and blue food ideas when I found and pinned these 4th of July Strawberries from The Sisters Cafe.  Don’t these just jump out at you?

Super easy to make, here is all you need:

Strawberries

White chocolate or vanilla candy melts. (I used candy melts)

Blue Sugar  Crystals.  Here is what I used:

Wash and thoroughly dry your strawberries.

In a microwave safe bowl, melt your white chocolate or candy melts until thoroughly melted.  Make sure you don’t overcook and burn your chocolate.

Dip your strawberry but don’t dip all the way.  Leave some of the red of the strawberry at the top so you can clearly see all three colors, red, white and blue.

This is no muy bueno.  See how you can barely see any red at the top?

This is muy bueno.  Make sure you leave a stripe of red berry at the top!

Drain off all excess white chocolate from the strawberry until it no longer drips and then dip into the blue sugar crystals. Place on waxed paper until dry.

These firmed up very quickly and made a beautiful presentation of red, white and blue!

From there she went to visit Tracy (the middle child) for one of her grandchildren’s high school graduation ceremony. She left from there to visit us so she could be here for my son’s high school graduation. We are all three so grateful for all the effort she makes to be present for important family events.
Not only am I grateful for that, but also for all the help she gives me. When she leaves, I am going to have to do my own laundry and dishes again. I am going to miss her.

Even as a grown woman, having my mother here brings back the feeling of being a kid again.  It is nice to be taken care of. But even better than that is the sense of peace she brings to our household. Everything seems to spin a little slower and I remember to cherish the important things, like time with family.
I guess having my mom here has me feeling whimsical. This craft caught my eye on Pinterest right away. But when I clicked the image it took me to this site. It’s in Chinese. I don’t understand Chinese. I tried Google Translate, but that didn’t get me far. (Update: One of our wonderful readers found the original source for this craft. You can see it here on Organimaniacs.) 

It took me a while, but I came up with my own version. I think it turned out pretty well!   To begin, I needed a pattern. To copy the one on the website I began with card stock. I turned it horizontally and made two circles (about 1 3/4 inch) at the top and bottom a little offset from each other.

Then I used a quarter to create the little round tail. From there I drew a very slight S curve (about 1 inch wide) from circle to circle. I erased the unnecessary lines and cut it out. Here is how it looked:

For each whirligig you will need 8 or 9 pieces cut out from cardstock.  If you are doing 2 colors, it works best to do 8 pieces and for mulicolor I like 9.  I began by laying all the pieces together in alternating colors. Then begin to rotate the pieces making sure to hinge everything along the inside of the “hook”.

Once you have all the pieces rotated, flip it over. Take two pieces that are opposite each other and hook them at the top. Keep going around the circle, hooking them to each other until you have created your whirligig. These will be great as table toppers. If you wanted to use it as a gift container, or party favor, something very light can fit inside. They also look great hanging from the ceiling. To hang them, tie thread to a paper clip and insert the paper clip in between to layers of paper. Then just wind the thread around until you can pull it up through the center.I love the versatility of this craft. You can change the colors to fit any holiday, or any theme. It is a bit of work at first, but once you figure it out, the results are spectacular.

If you wait too long, the blue  layer will set so fast that when you pour the white layer over the blue layer they won’t stick to each other. I waited too long and when I took the stars out of the silicone mold, the red and white layer stuck together (lesson learned). But the blue and white layer slipped apart as soon as they came out of the mold. I had to re-stack each star for the pictures. Here is how I avoided this happening with the red and white layer. I  poured a tablespoon of the red layer over the white layer as a test. Nailed it this time!I have to admit that even the hubster was impressed with how these turned out. My teenagers loved how they looked. Another great thing about these stars is that they hold up at room temperature really well. You don’t have to worry about them melting or losing their shape. Last but not least, how do they taste? Jello and condensed milk are quite the combo. I luvr them, the kids luvr’d them, which means…….

Jello Stars Recipe

Ingredients

• 2 – 3 ounce boxes of berry blue flavored Jello
• 2 – 3 ounce boxes of cherry flavored Jello
• 1 – 1 ounce box of Knox gelatine {4 envelopes}
• 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

• Layer #1: in a large bowl pour: your berry blue Jello mixes, 1 envelope of Knox gelatine, and 2 cups of HOT water. Mix well to combine. CAREFULLY pour mixture into dish. Place dish into refrigerator until set. Approximately 20-30 minutes. Be careful do not wait too long.
• Layer#2: in a large bowl pour: 2 envelopes of gelatine, 3/4 cup HOT water, 1/4 cup COLD water. Mix to combine. Into a separate bowl add: sweetened condensed milk and 1 cup HOT water. Mix to combine. CAREFULLY pour milk mixture into gelatine mixture. Mix to combine. SLOWLY pour white layer on top of BLUE layer. Return to refrigerator to set up. Approximately 20-30 minutes. Be careful do not wait too long.
• Layer #3: in a large bowl pour: cherry Jello mixes, 1 envelope of Knox gelatine, and 2 cups of HOT water. Mix to combine. CAREFULLY pour mixture into dish. Place dish into refrigerator until set. Approximately 20-30 minutes. Be careful do not wait too long.

He made the sandwiches quickly in a tin mold, and was kept so busy that he could not make change, but insisted on receiving the actual price for each ice cream sandwich — 1 cent.” In the beginning, the sandwich seller was known as a “hokey-pokey vendor,” which refers to the no longer peddled treat of a cut slab of ice cream. The men that peddled these once popular English treats through the streets of London, according to The New York Times, announced their presence by yelling, “Okey-pokey!” The New York ice cream man may have started these but Thimbleleanna gets credit for updating the old classic!

You have to work fast to make a patriotic “Okey-pokey!” Put a cookie sheet lined with wax paper in your freezer for 30 minutes. Now that your cookie sheet is chilled put your sprinkles on a large plate. Grab your ice cream sandwich, take the wrapper off and let it sit for a minute or two so the ice cream will soften. Dip the edges of the ice cream sandwich in your sprinkles, place on your chilled cookie sheet and return to the freezer. Place your ice cream sandwiches on a chilled plate just before serving. Supplies Needed:

• 1 Pool Noodle $1.97
• 3 Skeins Yarn Red, White, Blue $9
• Felt Stars $1.99
• Duct Tape: I already had some.

Total Cost $12.96

First, you need to tape the ends of your pool noodle together. Make sure you hold the two ends of the noodle snug against each other while taping. You can do this by yourself, but it is easier if one person holds the noodle ends together while another person tapes over them. If you don’t keep the ends together while taping, there will be a slight bulge in your wreath under the duct tape. Don’t worry too much about the duct tape being a little lumpy. Once you wrap your yarn over it, it will look fine.

I started by wrapping my blue yarn over the duct tape. I used my low temp glue gun to secure the end of the yarn. As long as the tip of my glue gun did not touch the pool noodle it worked fine. Once the tip of the glue gun touched the noodle and it melted slightly. If you don’t want to use a glue gun, another option that would work well is clear nail polish.

Here is a look at the back of my wreath where the blue yarn ends and the red yarn begins.Once my wreath was completely wrapped with yarn, I put on my glitter stars. I purchased the kind that are self adhesive and they worked just fine. It took about 2 1/2 – 3 hours to make my wreath. Or 5 1/2 to 6 episodes of Duck Dynasty. Yes I love their show, quack!

And then on May 9, 1986, the day before Mother’s Day, we picked up our sweet little 2 day  old daughter as she joined our family as our adopted daughter.  That Mother’s Day was one that I loved.  My heart was full as her presence enabled us to start our life together as a family.

Since that time, I have learned that there are many types of “Mothers” which was something that I didn’t have a full and deep grasp of when I was younger.  Aunts, sisters, grandmothers, friends, neighbors, mother-in-laws and co-workers can be the nurturing and mothering influences in other’s lives.  Where would we be without the ennobling example of tireless service and loving acts of the many women in our lives?  These too are “Mothers”.

Who in your life has had a mothering and a nurturing influence over you?   Whomever it might be, thank them for their example in your life. Let them know that they hold a special place in your heart.  And here’s a Free Mother’s Day Printable to help remind you about all the Mother’s that you are blessed with in your life!

Only three things are needed.  Bottles, vanilla beans and Vodka.  So easy!I  bought my bottles online from Specialty Bottles for .74 cents a  piece, and the vanilla beans at Amazon.com.   I have never bought Vodka in my life so felt a little unsure of what I was supposed to get, but it all looked the same so I just got the cheapest that I could find.   While purchasing the Vodka, the cashier did the RUDEST thing!  I had gotten my I.D. out to prove that I was over 21 and old enough to purchase liquor and SHE DIDN’T EVEN ASK FOR IT!  Sigh. Note to self.  Time to dye my hair.

The directions from the pin said to use 2-3 beans for 4 oz of vodka.  I just used two and that worked out fine.  I cut the vanilla beans in half and then cut each half all the way up the middle to expose the fleshy inside of the bean.

Into the jar it goes and pour the 4 oz. of vodka in.After capping the first fifteen bottles,  I looked at them and it appeared that at the bottom they were already starting to “steep” and the vodka was turning a beautiful amber color. How exciting! The bottles are supposed to steep for at least a month before using so I have made these in plenty of time.  And one of the best things about this is that when the hectic-ness (is that  a word?) of the holidays hit,  I will have these all ready to go to give to neighbors and friends.  What a stress reliever!  In fact, I think this might turn into a yearly tradition for me.

This made me so happy today and I would definitely say that This Pin Rocks!

UPDATE:  Here is a quick pic of my vanilla after a week of steeping.  This is so fun to watch and I can’t wait to give them out as Christmas presents.
